Matt Holliday goes deep in Cardinals’ win


JUPITER, Fla. — Matt Holliday went 2-for-2 with his first home run of spring and Carlos Martinez pitched six strong innings to lift the Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the Mets at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday.

Meeting for the fifth and final time this spring, both the Cardinals and Mets were eyeing some sort of positive momentum. St. Louis entered the day with one win in its last 13 games. The Mets are now winless in 11 straight.

The Mets used Neil Walker’s leadoff double in the second to push a run across against Martinez, but otherwise they had little success against the Cardinals’ starter. Following Walker’s hit, Martinez retired 13 straight. He struck out four, including Yoenis Cespedes to close his six-inning outing.

Martinez, who is slated to make his season debut on April 9, threw 49 of his 67 pitches for strikes. He was the first Cardinals starter to finish six innings in a game this spring and got extra work throwing in the bullpen after he exited to further stretch out his pitch count.

Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 0-for-3 in his first Grapefruit League appearance since March 10. Cabrera had been nursing an injury to the patella tendon in his left knee.
