Nearly every player on the roster has arrived in Arizona, including the other Cubs starters, , , and newcomer John Lackey. Cubs manager Joe Maddon, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer will meet with the media on Friday, and the first workout for pitchers and catchers will be Saturday. In his second season with the Cubs, Maddon not only has a new arm in Lackey, but a new outfielder in Jason Heyward and a new second baseman in Ben Zobrist.

This is a young team, led by National League Rookie of the Year , 24, plus Anthony Rizzo, 26; Addison Russell, 22; Kyle Schwarber, 22; and Jorge Soler, 23. But the addition of veterans Lackey , Heyward and Zobrist should give the Cubs more experience and a boost as they try to reach the postseason for the second straight season.

Last year, the Cubs won 97 games, earned a Wild Card berth and reached the NL Championship Series, only to be swept by the Mets. The Cubs open Cactus League play March 3 against the Brewers, and they open the regular season against the Angels on April 4 in Anaheim .
